Improving sustainable agricultural practices in Kenya
Category: Agriculture
Client: Village Vocations Program (VVP)
VVF is a CSO in Kenya (East Africa) that organises and supports farmers with training, value addition of products, branding and market linkages. Like KPD, VVP is among the five organisations supported by Hivos, where Mahiti was the technology partner.
VVF required a technology-supported system to help monitor cultivation practices, processing of agricultural products, cost-benefit ratio and socio-economic parameters of farmers to be able to build their capacities to engage in sustainable agricultural practices. On a long term basis, VVF also wanted to monitor and review markets for finished products, strategies for increasing market share, assessing competition and to review net returns and profits.
To meet this need Mahiti developed OurCrop, an IT application which can store data on socio-economic status of farmers, crops and cropping patterns, production and procurement, training inputs, soil conditions and weather/rainfall. OurCrop could also generate periodic assessment reports on field activities for Impact analysis and integrate administrative functions like accounting transaction, HR management and performance assessment.
