MIS plays an integral role in the development of under-developed communities...

Summary :

The impact of microfinance systems is huge, especially on marginalised sections of society.

I started working with Mahiti in 2008 while I was in Kolkata. My journey began with the project, ‘My SME News’, which was a print/ electronic and IVR (Integrated Voice Response) fortnightly magazine running from 2008 to 2010. Its primary objective was to collect relevant business data for small entrepreneurs and had a circulation of five lakh readers across Kolkata and surrounding areas. If I had to pick up one, this project was the most interesting assignment in Mahiti.

I then came to Bangalore and was given the responsibility of heading the department of ‘Banking and Community MIS (Management Information Systems)’. This brought me to work with Microfinance, Thrift and Credit societies, SHG development and Sustainable Agriculture. I started working with an MIS that captures data on various aspects of farmers cooperative development projects, that would help modify, improve and plan for the future.

Our service encompasses all aspects of data capture required for these sectors. The philosophy of MF in context with the marginal and rural community is very well covered by ‘OurBank’. On the other hand, ‘OurCrop’, MIS for sustainable agricultural projects is designed to capture various data and different aspects of crop cultivation and practises. It is built in such a way that it can be customised for project specific issues like irrigation, food security, sustainable agricultural practices, cooperative development marketing support.

Sadly enough microfinance is not always viewed in the right light. The impact of microfinance systems is huge, especially on marginalised sections of society. Sustainable agricultural projects can actually achieve their set goals by adopting an appropriate MIS technology. MIS plays an integral role in the development of under-developed communities.
