The growing link between technology, engaging society, and improving people's lives...

Summary :

All journeys have winding roads and ups and downs and so has the journey with Mahiti been!

I first became associated with Mahiti in 2010; and was Chair of the Board between 2002 and 2010. I currently serve as an Adviser.

All journeys have winding roads and ups and downs and so has the journey with Mahiti been! However I have no hesitation in saying that overall it has been a very positive association.

To mention two aspects: The first relates to the growing link between technology, engaging society, and improving people's lives. It is only through my association with Mahiti that I am able to understand and explore the tip of this fascinating iceberg.

The second relates to 'management'. I am generally interested in the management of small and medium size organisations and it has been intriguing, to say the least, to continually brainstorm with Mahiti's senior team about management issues and the changes which need to be made, continually(!) to adapt to the changing environment and opportunities.

To the best of my recollection, there are many projects which have made a great impact on people's lives. To very briefly mention three varied examples: 1) Between 2008 and 2010 Mahiti ran a project called NGO-in-a-Box. It related to spreading the use of 'Open Source' software. Mahiti conducted 100 workshops involving 1,200 NGOs, mostly within India. NGOs are now increasingly using 'free and open-source' software.  2) In 2012, Mahiti developed a ‘Disaster Response System’ for the Bangladesh Government. The system integrates voice and SMS communication around mobile phones. In a recent 'flood' disaster two months' ago the system was handling 27,000 inquiries a day, and 3) Since 2008 Mahiti has been the technology partner for Bangalore Cares. The Bangalore Cares website is more of a portal than a website. It has enabled Bangalore Cares to serve over 250 NGOs and has especially supported the ‘World 10K Run’ which has enabled NGOs to raise over Rs 11 crore. Mahiti's invaluable support continues.
